Tawang is situated at approximately 10,000 feet, while Sela Pass and Bum La are considerably higher. Travellers should therefore be prepared for significant changes in altitude and temperature.
We recommend:
Allowing time for acclimatisation in Tawang
Staying hydrated
Carrying warm and layered clothing
Carrying personal medicines and essential medication
Using comfortable walking shoes
Preparing for changing weather
Following local authority and driver/guide instructions
Avoiding strenuous activity immediately after reaching high altitude
The Tawang district administration specifically advises acclimatisation before visiting higher-altitude areas and recommends checking weather and road conditions before travel.
Rather than rushing directly to Tawang, this itinerary introduces you to the landscapes and cultures of Bhalukpong, Bomdila and Dirang before reaching the high mountains.
The journey combines monasteries, mountains, waterfalls, lakes, culture and scenic road journeys, rather than focusing only on sightseeing.
Travel at your own pace with a private vehicle and the flexibility to adjust sightseeing according to weather, road conditions and your interests.
