Day 1: Guwahati – Bhalukpong – Bomdila

Distance: Approximately 260 km
Overnight: Bomdila

Your journey into Arunachal Pradesh begins from Guwahati. Travel towards the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas through Assam before entering Arunachal Pradesh at Bhalukpong.

Continue through the forested mountain roads towards Bomdila, enjoying changing landscapes as the plains gradually give way to Himalayan valleys.

Depending on arrival time, explore the surroundings of Bomdila and experience the peaceful atmosphere of this mountain town.

Experience Focus: Himalayan foothills, mountain landscapes and the transition from Assam to Arunachal Pradesh.

Day 2: Bomdila – Dirang – Sela Pass – Tawang

Overnight: Tawang

After breakfast, continue towards Tawang through some of Western Arunachal's most dramatic mountain scenery.

The journey takes you through Dirang and onwards towards the spectacular Sela Pass, the traditional gateway to Tawang. The pass and surrounding lakes offer magnificent Himalayan views; road conditions can vary considerably with weather, particularly during winter.

Continue towards Tawang and check into your accommodation.

The evening is kept relaxed to allow travellers to begin acclimatising to Tawang's high altitude.

Day 3: Discover Tawang – Monastery, Culture & Heritage

Overnight: Tawang

Today is dedicated to discovering Tawang and its Buddhist heritage.

Visit the magnificent Tawang Monastery, one of India's most important Buddhist monasteries and a major centre of the region's Monpa Buddhist heritage. The monastery sits dramatically above the Tawang-Chu valley.

Continue with visits to selected local attractions depending on time and accessibility, which may include:

• local monasteries and nunneries

• Tawang market

Spend time observing local life and, where appropriate, learning about Monpa traditions, Buddhist practices, handicrafts and cuisine.

Day 4: Bum La Pass & High-Altitude Lakes

Overnight: Tawang

Today is one of the most memorable experiences of the journey.

Travel towards Bum La Pass, a high-altitude border area near the India–China frontier. A special permission process is required for visitors, and access can depend on weather, road conditions and local/administrative restrictions.

Along the way, experience the stark beauty of the high Himalayas, with mountain passes, lakes and changing landscapes.

Where accessible, continue towards Sangestar Lake / Madhuri Lake and other high-altitude attractions.

Return to Tawang by evening.

Important: Bum La excursions are subject to the permissions issued by the authorities, weather, road conditions and operational restrictions. The itinerary will be adjusted if access is not possible.

Day 5: Tawang – Jang – Nuranang Falls & Local Experiences

Overnight: Tawang

After breakfast, explore the landscapes around Tawang and Jang.

Visit the spectacular Nuranang Falls, where the Nuranang River plunges through the mountainous landscape. Continue through the surrounding valleys and villages, with opportunities to experience the natural beauty and local character of the region.

The remainder of the day can be kept flexible for photography, local exploration or additional sightseeing around Tawang.

Day 6: Tawang – Dirang

Overnight: Dirang

After breakfast, begin the return journey from Tawang towards Dirang.

On arrival in Dirang, relax and explore the surroundings.

Dirang provides a welcome change of altitude and landscape after several days in Tawang.

Day 7: Dirang – Bhalukpong – Guwahati

Your Western Arunachal journey comes to an end as you travel back through Bhalukpong towards Guwahati.
