India has one of the world's earliest histories of golf outside the British Isles.
The game arrived in India in the nineteenth century, and golf soon became popular among British military officers, civil servants, merchants and tea planters.
In Assam, the connection was particularly strong.
The British tea industry was expanding rapidly across the Brahmaputra Valley during the nineteenth century. Tea planters lived for long periods in remote plantation districts, far from the major cities.
They needed recreation.
Golf became one of the sports that developed within this plantation society.
The result was unusual.
Instead of golf being confined to large urban clubs, the game spread into the tea-growing countryside.
Courses appeared around planter clubs and tea estates.
And Assam gradually developed its own distinctive form of golf:

The connection between tea and golf is not accidental.
During the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Assam's tea planters often lived in isolated estates.
The plantation was their workplace.
The bungalow was their home.

Golf therefore became embedded in the same landscape that produced Assam's world-famous tea.
That is why the history of Assam golf cannot really be separated from the history of Assam tea.
