Designed for travellers who want to experience Assam beyond the usual highlights, this journey brings together the wildlife of Kaziranga National Park, the historic tea country around Jorhat, the cultural traditions of Majuli Island, and the architectural heritage of the Ahom era.
With private travel, local expertise and time to experience each destination, this is an ideal introduction to Assam for German and European travellers looking for authentic Northeast India experiences.
Duration: 8 Days / 7 Nights
Destination: Assam, Northeast India
Travel Style: Private / Tailor-Made
Ideal For: Wildlife, tea, culture, photography and heritage
Best Season: October to April
Highlights: Kaziranga National Park, Assam tea gardens, tea estate experience, Majuli Island, Ahom heritage, local cuisine and village life
Arrive in Guwahati, the gateway to Northeast India. Meet your local representative and begin your journey towards Kaziranga National Park.
The drive gradually leaves the city behind as the landscape changes to Assam's countryside, with paddy fields, villages and the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas appearing along the way.
Arrive at your wildlife lodge and settle in.
Overnight: Kaziranga
Begin your Assam wildlife experience with a safari in Kaziranga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the world's most important habitats for the greater one-horned rhinoceros.
Depending on the safari zone and seasonal conditions, you may encounter rhinoceros, Asian elephants, wild water buffalo, swamp deer, wild boar and a wide variety of birds.
The landscape itself is part of the experience—grasslands, wetlands, woodland and the Brahmaputra floodplain create one of India's most distinctive wildlife environments.
Overnight: Kaziranga
After breakfast, travel towards Jorhat, the heart of Assam's tea country.
Along the way, experience the changing landscape of rural Assam before arriving among extensive tea gardens.
The afternoon offers an opportunity to relax and experience the atmosphere of a traditional tea estate or heritage property.
Overnight: Tea Country / Jorhat
Today is dedicated to understanding the story behind Assam tea.
Visit a tea garden and, where operational and seasonally possible, see aspects of tea production from the plantation to processing. Learn how Assam's distinctive tea developed into one of the world's best-known tea origins.
There is also time to enjoy a relaxed tea tasting and explore the surroundings of the estate.
The experience can be adapted for travellers interested in tea history, photography, plantation life or the architecture of Assam's historic tea estates.
Overnight: Tea Country / Jorhat
Travel towards the mighty Brahmaputra and cross to Majuli, one of Assam's most distinctive cultural landscapes.
Majuli is known for its Vaishnavite monasteries, known locally as Satras, traditional arts and crafts, village communities and unique relationship with the Brahmaputra River.
Visit a Satra and discover aspects of Assam's living cultural traditions. Depending on local conditions and seasonal availability, you may also encounter traditional mask-making, weaving or other village crafts.
The day is intentionally unhurried, allowing time to experience the island rather than simply ticking off attractions.
Overnight: Majuli
After breakfast, return to the mainland and continue your journey through the historic landscape of Upper Assam.
Explore the heritage of the Ahom kingdom, which ruled Assam for almost six centuries and left a remarkable cultural and architectural legacy.
Visit important historical sites around Sivasagar, including the distinctive Ahom monuments and royal remains.
This is an opportunity to understand the history of Assam beyond its natural landscapes and discover the civilisation that shaped much of the region's identity.
Overnight: Jorhat / Upper Assam
Enjoy a final morning in Assam's cultural capital Jorhat. Explore the evergreen forest with a local forest guide and look for the Western Hoolock Gibbon, India's only ape species.
After the forest walk, enjoy breakfast and a freshly brewed cup of Assam tea before continuing towards the historic Lachit Borphukan Maidam.
Overnight: Jorhat
After breakfast, transfer to Jorhat Airport for your onward journey.
Your Assam journey ends with memories of rhinoceroses in Kaziranga, tea gardens stretching across the valley, the cultural world of Majuli and the enduring heritage of the Ahom kingdom.
Experience Kaziranga's remarkable biodiversity and search for the greater one-horned rhinoceros, elephants, wild buffalo and diverse birdlife.
Go beyond drinking Assam tea and discover the landscapes, history and people behind one of the world's great tea-growing regions.
Meet Assam through its villages, crafts, Satras and living traditions rather than only through conventional sightseeing.
Explore the legacy of the Ahom kingdom and discover a side of Assam often missed on shorter Northeast India itineraries.
