This journey moves from the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas into the high-altitude Buddhist landscape of Tawang. The journey combines mountain scenery with monasteries, local culture, traditional architecture and opportunities to experience the distinctive heritage of the Monpa people.
Tawang Monastery is the journey's spiritual and cultural centrepiece; Arunachal Tourism describes it as a major centre of Mahayana Buddhist life and culture.
Day 1 — Guwahati → Bomdila
Depart Guwahati and travel towards Arunachal Pradesh.
The landscape changes from the Assam plains to forested Himalayan foothills.
Continue to Bomdila.
Overnight: Bomdila
Day 2 — Bomdila: Valley & Living Traditions
Explore Bomdila and its surroundings.
Visit traditional settlements, local architecture and the valley landscape. Depending on local conditions, visit Bomdila monastery or other cultural sites.
Bomdila is known for its valley scenery, traditional stone architecture, monasteries and surrounding cultural landscape.
Overnight: Bomdila
A spectacular Himalayan drive towards Tawang. Cross Sela Pass and pause beside its high-altitude lake and mountain landscape. Visit Jaswant Garh, the story of an Indian Soldier.
Continue towards Tawang.
Overnight: Tawang
Devote the day to Tawang and its Buddhist heritage.
Visit Tawang Monastery, founded in the 17th century and one of the most important Buddhist institutions in the Himalayan region.
Explore the monastery's architecture, prayer spaces, manuscripts and cultural surroundings.
Overnight: Tawang
Continue exploring the spiritual landscape around Tawang.
Visit selected monasteries, nunneries and sacred sites according to local access and timing.
Allow time for quiet observation and photography.
Overnight: Tawang
Explore the local cultural landscape. Visit a local craft centre or artisan community where available.
Discover traditional textiles, weaving, woodwork and other local forms of craftsmanship.
This day deliberately connects Buddhist heritage with living culture, rather than treating monasteries simply as monuments.
Overnight: Tawang
Begin the return journey through the Himalayan landscape.
Pause at selected viewpoints and cultural locations along the route.
Overnight: Dirang
Descend gradually from the mountains towards the Assam plains.
Relax after the Himalayan journey or if time permits, go for a jeep safari in Kaziranga National Park.
Overnight: Assam / Kaziranga
Transfer to Jorhat or Guwahati Airport for your onward journey.
Jorhat is around 100 km from Kaziranga and has direct connectivity to Delhi and Kolkata (CCU). Whereas Guwahati is around 205 km from Kaziranga.
