Assam + Arunachal — Tea, Culture & Buddhist Himalaya | アッサム+アルナーチャル — 茶と伝統文化、仏教ヒマラヤをめぐる旅
Guwahati . Kaziranga • Tea Country • Majuli • Sivasagar • Dirang • Sela Pass • Tawang • Bomdila • Jorhat
This is the most complete of the three journeys. It begins with Assam's wildlife and tea country, moves through the living traditions of Majuli and the historical world of Sivasagar, and then climbs into the Buddhist Himalayas of Arunachal Pradesh.
The result is a journey across two very different worlds — the Brahmaputra Valley and the Eastern Himalayas.
Arrive in Guwahati and meet your Assam Discovery representative. Begin the journey towards Kaziranga National Park, travelling through the changing landscapes of the Assam plains.
The evening is intentionally relaxed, giving you time to recover from your journey and experience the atmosphere of rural Assam.
Overnight in Kaziranga
Begin early with a wildlife safari through Kaziranga's grasslands and wetlands. The park is renowned for the greater one-horned rhinoceros, but the experience can also include elephants, wild buffalo, deer and a remarkable variety of birdlife.
Depending on the season, park conditions and safari arrangements, enjoy another wildlife experience later in the day.
For photographers, the changing light across the grasslands provides excellent opportunities for observing Assam's wildlife and landscape.
Overnight: Kaziranga
After breakfast, travel eastwards towards Jorhat, entering one of Assam's great tea-growing regions. The landscape gradually changes from the open grasslands of Kaziranga to extensive tea plantations.
Arrive at your tea estate or heritage-style accommodation. In the afternoon, take a gentle walk through the tea garden and learn how Assam's distinctive tea landscape has developed over generations.
Enjoy your first relaxed cup of Assam Tea in the plantation surroundings.
Overnight: Tea Estate / Jorhat
Today is devoted to discovering Assam's tea culture.
Walk through the plantation and learn about: tea cultivation, plucking, seasonal cycles, tea processing, the character of Assam Tea
Where operational schedules permit, visit a working tea factory to see how freshly harvested leaves are transformed into finished tea.
Later, enjoy a guided Assam Tea tasting, learning to appreciate differences in aroma, colour, strength, body and finish.
The experience is intentionally unhurried—an opportunity to discover Assam Tea at its source rather than simply visiting a plantation as a sightseeing stop.
Overnight: Tea Estate / Jorhat
Leave tea country and travel towards the mighty Brahmaputra River. Board the ferry for Majuli, allowing the river crossing itself to become part of the journey.
On arrival, continue through the island's rural landscape. Visit a selected Satra, one of the traditional centres of Assam's Neo-Vaishnavite cultural heritage.
Depending on local availability and timing, visit a traditional craft centre where artisans continue practices such as mask-making, weaving or pottery. The evening is free to experience Majuli's peaceful village environment.
Overnight: Majuli
Spend a full day exploring the cultural landscape of Majuli. Visit selected Satras and learn about their role in preserving religious, artistic and performing traditions.
Meet local artisans where possible and observe traditional craftsmanship. Depending on local arrangements, experiences may include:
Traditional mask-making
Discover how expressive masks are created for Assamese devotional theatre.
Handloom weaving
Observe traditional weaving and the creation of locally distinctive textiles.
Village life
Walk through the countryside and experience the agricultural and riverine environment of the island.
A traditional Assamese or local lunch can introduce you to the flavours of the region.
The afternoon can be kept flexible for photography, cultural interaction or simply enjoying the landscape.
Overnight: Majuli
After breakfast, cross back to the mainland and continue towards Sivasagar, the historic centre of the Ahom kingdom. Explore selected monuments associated with Assam's royal history, including:
Rang Ghar — the historic royal amphitheatre. Talatal Ghar — an extraordinary palace and military complex. Sivasagar Sivadol — one of the region's most important historic temples.
Where time and route conditions permit, the journey can be extended towards Charaideo, the historic burial landscape of the Ahom royalty.
Continue towards Jorhat for the night.
This historical chapter adds another dimension to the journey: Assam is revealed not only through landscapes and traditions, but through the history of a kingdom that shaped the region for centuries.
Overnight: Jorhat
After breakfast, begin the journey towards Arunachal Pradesh. As you travel northwards, the landscape gradually rises from the Assam plains into the Eastern Himalayan foothills.
Continue towards Dirang, a beautiful mountain valley known for its scenery, traditional settlements and distinctive Himalayan culture.
The evening is free to enjoy the mountain atmosphere.
Overnight: Dirang
Spend the morning exploring Dirang and its surroundings.
Depending on local conditions and permissions, visit traditional settlements, a monastery, historic architecture or other cultural sites.
Experience the valley landscape and learn about the local communities whose traditions have developed within this Himalayan environment.
Where available, a local cultural or craftsmanship experience can be arranged.
The emphasis is on meeting the living culture of the region, rather than simply ticking off monuments.
Overnight: Dirang
Today is one of the most spectacular drives of the journey. Ascend towards Sela Pass, travelling through dramatic mountain scenery.
Pause at the high-altitude landscape around Sela and continue towards Tawang.
As the altitude increases, the landscape becomes increasingly dramatic, with rugged mountains, valleys and high Himalayan terrain.
Arrive in Tawang and settle into your accommodation.
Overnight: Tawang
Today is dedicated to the cultural heart of the journey. Visit Tawang Monastery, one of the most important Buddhist monasteries in the Eastern Himalayas.
Explore its architecture, prayer spaces and cultural surroundings while learning about the Buddhist traditions of the region. Depending on local conditions and access, visit additional monasteries, sacred sites or cultural locations around Tawang.
Allow time for quiet observation and photography.
The experience is not simply about visiting monasteries—it is about understanding how Buddhist heritage remains part of the living cultural landscape of the Himalayas.
Overnight: Tawang
A second day in Tawang allows the journey to move beyond a single monastery visit.
Explore selected cultural and natural sites around Tawang according to season and local conditions.
Where possible, experience local craftsmanship, traditional food or interaction with the local community.
The day can also be kept flexible for photography and enjoying the Himalayan surroundings at an unhurried pace.
Overnight: Tawang
Begin the return journey from Tawang.
Travel through the dramatic mountain landscapes towards Bomdila.
The changing scenery—from the high-altitude environment around Tawang to the forested mountain valleys—becomes part of the experience.
Arrive in Bomdila and relax after the day's journey.
Overnight: Bomdila
After breakfast, descend from the Eastern Himalayas towards Assam.
Continue through the foothills and plains towards Jorhat.
The return to Assam provides a final opportunity to appreciate the extraordinary geographical transition experienced during the journey—from Himalayan mountains back to the Brahmaputra Valley.
Arrive in Jorhat and check into your accommodation.
Overnight: Jorhat
Enjoy a relaxed final morning in Jorhat.
Depending on your departure time, there may be an opportunity for:
a final Assam Tea tasting
a short tea-garden visit
shopping for premium Assam Tea
local handicrafts and souvenirs
Transfer to Jorhat Airport for your onward journey.
