Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Tour
A carefully crafted journey through three of Northeast India's most remarkable regions, combining the tea country of Assam, the wildlife of Kaziranga, the Himalayan landscapes and Monpa heritage of Arunachal Pradesh, and the waterfalls, living root bridges, Khasi villages and crystal-clear rivers of Meghalaya.
The journey is designed as a progressive overland experience, beginning in Jorhat and travelling onwards through Kaziranga, Dirang, Tawang, Bomdila, Tezpur, Shillong, Cherrapunjee, Dawki and finally Guwahati—allowing travellers to discover new landscapes rather than repeatedly travelling the same roads.
Detailed Tour itinerary
Arrive in Jorhat, the cultural and tea heartland of Upper Assam. With direct flight connectivity from major Indian cities including Delhi and Kolkata, Jorhat provides a convenient and meaningful starting point for a journey through Northeast India.
Upon arrival, meet your local representative and transfer to your hotel.
Depending on your arrival time, begin your introduction to Assam with a relaxed visit to the surrounding tea country. Jorhat is closely associated with Assam's world-renowned tea industry, and its landscape is characterised by extensive tea gardens, colonial-era tea establishments and the distinctive rhythm of life in Upper Assam.
If time permits, visit a nearby tea garden to experience the landscape where Assam's famous tea is cultivated. The experience can include a gentle walk through the tea estate and an introduction to the traditional tea-growing environment.
Relax at the hotel in the evening and prepare for the journey ahead.
Overnight: Jorhat
After breakfast, depart Jorhat and travel towards Kaziranga National Park, one of India's most celebrated wildlife destinations.
Approx. distance: 115–130 km
Travel time: Approximately 2 hours, depending on road conditions and stops.
The journey takes you through the landscapes of Upper Assam, where tea gardens, villages, agricultural fields and the Brahmaputra valley create a distinctly Assamese setting.
On arrival near Kaziranga, check in at your wildlife resort.
Depending on arrival time, the afternoon can be spent relaxing at the resort or exploring the surrounding countryside. The region around Kaziranga offers opportunities to observe rural Assamese life, traditional homes, wetlands and agricultural landscapes.
Enjoy a relaxed evening at the resort and prepare for the wildlife experiences of the following day.
Overnight: Kaziranga
Today is dedicated to exploring Kaziranga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the world's most important habitats for the greater one-horned rhinoceros.
Begin the day with an early morning wildlife safari, when the forest and grasslands are at their most atmospheric.
Depending on the safari zone and prevailing conditions, the experience may reveal rhinoceros, Asian elephants, wild water buffalo, swamp deer, wild boar and numerous species of birds. Kaziranga's combination of tall elephant grass, wetlands, woodland and open floodplain creates an exceptionally diverse wildlife habitat.
Return to the resort for breakfast and some time to relax.
Later, depending on the safari schedule, continue with another wildlife experience or explore the Orchid Park, where more than 500 Orchid species are preserved..
Overnight: Kaziranga
After breakfast, begin the spectacular transition from the plains of Assam into the Himalayas of Arunachal Pradesh.
Approx. distance: 260 km
Travel time: Approximately 7-8 hours, depending on road and weather conditions.
The route takes you through Tezpur and Bhalukpong, the gateway to Arunachal Pradesh, before gradually climbing into the Himalayan foothills.
As the landscape changes, the flat Brahmaputra Valley gives way to forested mountains, winding roads and increasingly dramatic Himalayan scenery. Continue through the mountain route towards Bomdila and onwards to Dirang.
The journey itself becomes part of the experience, with changing vegetation, mountain streams, valleys and viewpoints appearing along the way.
Arrive in Dirang by evening and check in at your hotel. After the long mountain journey, enjoy a relaxed evening in the peaceful Himalayan surroundings.
Overnight: Dirang
After breakfast, begin one of the most spectacular road journeys of the entire expedition—from Dirang towards Tawang.
Approx. distance: 135–150 km
Travel time: Approximately 5–7 hours, depending on weather, road and high-altitude conditions.
The road climbs steadily into the high Himalayas, passing through some of Arunachal Pradesh's most dramatic mountain landscapes.
One of the major highlights is the Sela region, where high-altitude lakes and rugged mountain terrain create an extraordinary Himalayan panorama. Continue towards Jaswant Garh, associated with the Indian soldier Jaswant Singh Rawat, before descending towards the Tawang region.
The landscape changes dramatically along the way, with deep valleys, waterfalls, snow-covered mountains during suitable seasons and remote Himalayan settlements.
Arrive in Tawang, situated high in the mountains and surrounded by the distinctive landscape of the Monpa region.Check in to your hotel and enjoy a restful evening.
Overnight: Tawang
After breakfast, spend the day exploring the cultural heart of Tawang.
Begin with Tawang Monastery, one of the most significant Buddhist monasteries in the Himalayan region and an important centre of Tibetan Buddhist culture. The monastery's architecture, prayer halls, murals, scriptures and surrounding mountain setting provide an opportunity to understand the deep spiritual heritage of the Monpa people.
Continue exploring selected attractions around Tawang according to available time, including viewpoints and culturally significant locations. The day is intentionally paced to allow travellers to appreciate the atmosphere rather than simply moving from one attraction to another.
Spend time experiencing the distinctive character of Tawang—the prayer flags moving in the mountain wind, traditional Monpa influences, Buddhist heritage and spectacular Himalayan surroundings.
Return to the hotel in the evening.
Overnight: Tawang
Today is dedicated to a spectacular excursion into the high-altitude landscapes surrounding Tawang.
Depending on weather, road conditions and the required permissions, the excursion may include Bum La Pass, Sangetsar Lake (Madhuri Lake) and P.T. Tso.
The journey towards the high frontier takes you through an increasingly dramatic landscape of barren mountain slopes, high-altitude lakes and vast Himalayan horizons.
At Bum La, the remote mountain environment provides a powerful sense of the scale and isolation of the Eastern Himalayas. The surrounding landscape changes dramatically with the seasons, from snow-covered terrain to stark high-altitude scenery.
Continue to the spectacular Sangetsar Lake, popularly known as Madhuri Lake, surrounded by rugged mountains.
Because this is a high-altitude excursion, the day's programme remains subject to weather, road conditions, local regulations and official permissions.
Overnight: Tawang
After breakfast, bid farewell to Tawang and begin the journey towards Bomdila.
Approx. distance: 175–185 km
Travel time: Approximately 6–8 hours, depending on road and weather conditions.
The journey follows the mountain roads back through the spectacular landscapes of Arunachal Pradesh. The scenery gradually changes as you descend from the higher Himalayan environment towards the lower mountain ranges.
Along the way, enjoy views of forested valleys, mountain villages, waterfalls and winding Himalayan roads.
Arrive in Bomdila, a beautiful mountain town known for its Buddhist heritage, monasteries, craft traditions and panoramic views of the surrounding Himalayan ranges.

Overnight: Bomdila
After breakfast, depart Bomdila and begin the descent from Arunachal Pradesh towards Tezpur in Assam.

Travel time: Approximately 5–6 hours.
As the road descends, the high mountain landscape gradually gives way to greener foothills and eventually the broad plains of Assam.
Tezpur, situated beside the Brahmaputra, has an important place in Assam's history and cultural traditions. Depending on arrival time, explore selected heritage and scenic attractions around the city.
The transition from the mountains to the Brahmaputra Valley provides another striking change of landscape within the journey.

Approx. distance: 260–280 km
Travel time: Approximately 5–7 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions.
The journey gradually moves from the plains into the rolling landscapes of Meghalaya. As you climb towards the Khasi Hills, the scenery changes once again—forests, valleys, streams, pine-covered slopes and mountain settlements replacing the broad Assam plains.
The approach to Shillong introduces travellers to Meghalaya's distinctive highland environment.
On arrival, check in to your hotel and relax. Depending on arrival time, enjoy a leisurely evening in Shillong or explore a nearby area of the city.

After the museum visit, check in at the hotel and enjoy some time at leisure.
As evening approaches, proceed for a memorable dinner cruise on the Brahmaputra River.
Cruising along the mighty Brahmaputra as the sun sets provides a fitting finale to the sightseeing portion of the journey. Enjoy dinner onboard while taking in the changing colours of the sky, the river landscape and the evening atmosphere of Guwahati.
