Best Time for an Assam Meghalaya Tour

The ideal travel period depends on the experiences you want to include.

October to April is generally suitable for combining wildlife experiences in Assam with Meghalaya sightseeing, although conditions vary by destination and season.

November to February can be particularly attractive for travellers looking for cooler conditions and wildlife experiences.

March to May can be rewarding for nature, wildlife and tea-related journeys.

June to September brings Meghalaya's famous monsoon landscapes, but heavy rainfall can affect road conditions and sightseeing. Some attractions may also be seasonally inaccessible.

Suggested Assam Meghalaya Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Guwahati – Gateway to Northeast India

Arrive in Guwahati, the principal gateway to Northeast India and an important cultural centre of Assam.

Upon arrival, meet your private driver and begin your journey through Assam. Depending on your arrival time, there may be an opportunity to explore selected attractions in and around Guwahati before settling into your accommodation.

Guwahati lies beside the mighty Brahmaputra River and provides an interesting introduction to the landscape and culture of Assam. Depending on your arrival schedule, sightseeing can be arranged according to your interests and available time.

Relax at the hotel in the evening and prepare for the journey towards Assam's wildlife country.

Overnight: Guwahati

Day 2: Guwahati → Kaziranga National Park – Into Assam's Wildlife Country

After breakfast, depart Guwahati and begin your journey towards Kaziranga National Park, one of Northeast India's most important wildlife destinations.

Approx. distance: 190–220 km
Travel time: Approximately 4–5 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions.

The journey takes you through the changing landscapes of Assam, gradually leaving the urban environment of Guwahati behind. Rural settlements, agricultural fields, wetlands and tea-growing landscapes appear along the route, offering glimpses of everyday life in Assam.

As you approach Kaziranga, the landscape becomes increasingly wild, with grasslands, wetlands and forested areas forming the natural environment of the national park.

Arrive at your wildlife resort and check in.

Depending on your arrival time, the remainder of the day can be spent relaxing at the resort or exploring the surrounding countryside.

Day 3: Kaziranga National Park – Wildlife Safari in the Brahmaputra Floodplains

Today is dedicated to exploring the extraordinary wildlife of Kaziranga National Park.

Begin with a safari through the park's distinctive landscape of tall elephant grass, wetlands, woodland and open floodplains.

Kaziranga is internationally renowned for its population of the greater one-horned rhinoceros. The park's diverse habitats also support Asian elephants, wild water buffalo, deer, wild boar and an impressive variety of resident and migratory birds.

The experience is not limited to wildlife sightings. The changing landscape, misty mornings, wetlands and distant Himalayan foothills create a remarkable setting for nature and wildlife photography.

Depending on the operating season, safari zone availability and your interests, additional safari experiences can be arranged.

Return to your accommodation and enjoy a relaxed evening surrounded by the atmosphere of Assam's wilderness.

Day 4: Kaziranga → Shillong – From Assam's Plains to the Khasi Hills

After breakfast, begin your journey from Kaziranga towards Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya.

Approx. distance: 300–330 km
Travel time: Approximately 7–8 hours, depending on road and traffic conditions.

The journey offers a fascinating change of landscape. The broad plains of Assam gradually give way to the forested hills of Meghalaya as the road climbs towards the Khasi Plateau.

Along the way, the scenery changes from agricultural landscapes and river plains to rolling hills, forests, streams and mountain settlements.

As you approach Shillong, the cooler highland environment and pine-covered slopes introduce you to a completely different side of Northeast India.

Arrive in Shillong and check in to your hotel.

The evening is kept at leisure, allowing you to relax after the journey or take a gentle introduction to the atmosphere of the hill city.

Day 5: Shillong Local Sightseeing – Culture, Waterfalls & Highland Landscapes

After breakfast, spend the day discovering Shillong, often regarded as the cultural and musical heart of Meghalaya.

Begin with Shillong Peak, subject to weather and local access, where panoramic views can be enjoyed over the surrounding hills and city.

Continue to Elephant Falls, a picturesque waterfall surrounded by lush vegetation. Depending on your interests and available time, the sightseeing can also include Ward's Lake, the Cathedral of Mary Help of Christians, local markets and selected cultural attractions.

Shillong's character is shaped not only by its mountain landscape but also by the distinctive traditions of the Khasi people. Time can be allowed to explore local handicrafts, cuisine and the everyday atmosphere of the hill city.

The programme can be adjusted according to your interests, allowing either a more comprehensive sightseeing experience or a relaxed exploration of Shillong.

Day 6: Shillong → Sohra (Cherrapunji) – Waterfalls, Caves & Dramatic Khasi Landscapes

After breakfast, leave Shillong and travel towards Sohra (Cherrapunji), one of Meghalaya's most spectacular highland destinations.

Approx. distance: 55–60 km
Travel time: Approximately 1.5–2.5 hours, excluding sightseeing stops.

The journey itself is an important part of the experience, taking you through rolling Khasi hills, pine forests, deep valleys and dramatic viewpoints.

Along the way, explore some of Sohra's iconic attractions, which may include Nohkalikai Falls, Seven Sisters Falls, Mawsmai Cave and Eco Park, depending on weather, season and available time.

Nohkalikai plunges dramatically from the surrounding plateau, while Seven Sisters Falls creates a spectacular curtain of water along the limestone cliffs during the wetter months.

The limestone caves and forested landscapes provide another dimension to Sohra's natural environment.

Continue through the surrounding Khasi countryside, with opportunities to stop at scenic viewpoints and traditional villages.

Check in to your accommodation in Sohra and enjoy the peaceful mountain atmosphere.

Day 7: Living Root Bridges & Khasi Villages – A Living Tradition of Meghalaya

Today is dedicated to one of Meghalaya's most distinctive experiences—the extraordinary Living Root Bridges.

These remarkable natural structures have been developed over generations by Khasi communities, who carefully guide and train the living roots of rubber fig trees to form bridges across streams and forest valleys.

Unlike conventional bridges, the structures continue to grow and strengthen with time. They represent an extraordinary relationship between traditional knowledge, community life and the natural environment.

Depending on the selected bridge, the experience may involve a forest walk along uneven and sometimes steep trails. The walking programme can be selected according to your interests and fitness level.

Along the way, experience the peaceful atmosphere of Meghalaya's forested valleys and traditional Khasi settlements.

The day provides much more than a sightseeing opportunity—it offers an insight into an indigenous tradition that has developed in harmony with the surrounding landscape.

Day 8: Dawki & Mawlynnong – Crystal-Clear Waters & Khasi Village Life

After breakfast, continue towards the eastern Khasi Hills for a full-day excursion to Dawki and Mawlynnong.

The journey takes you through beautiful mountain landscapes and traditional Khasi villages before reaching Dawki, situated close to the India–Bangladesh international border.

Dawki is particularly known for the Umngot River, whose exceptionally clear waters can create a remarkable visual effect during favourable seasonal conditions. Subject to season, weather and local conditions, an optional boat ride can be arranged on the river.

Continue towards Mawlynnong, where the village landscape provides another perspective on Khasi community life and the relationship between people and their surroundings.

Explore the village environment and enjoy the surrounding greenery before beginning the return journey.

Depending on the final itinerary and travel preferences, the night can be spent in Shillong or in the surrounding Meghalaya region.

Day 9: Meghalaya → Guwahati – Return to the Brahmaputra Valley

After breakfast, begin your journey back towards Guwahati.

Approx. distance: 100 km from Shillong
Travel time: Approximately 3–4 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions.

As you descend from the Khasi Hills, the landscape gradually changes once again, with the mountain environment giving way to the broad plains of Assam.

Depending on your schedule, there may be time for additional sightseeing in Guwahati, local shopping or a relaxed experience beside the Brahmaputra.

For travellers with a late departure the following day, the evening can be kept free to enjoy the city at leisure.
