Arrive at Guwahati, the gateway to Assam and Northeast India.
Meet your Assam Discovery representative and transfer to your hotel.
After check-in, relax and prepare for the wildlife expedition.
If your arrival is early enough, an optional introductory nature/birding experience can be arranged around suitable habitats near Guwahati.
Overnight: Guwahati Expedition focus: Introduction to Assam's landscape, wildlife and the Brahmaputra valley.
Approx. 50–60 km | Around 1.5–2 hours
After an early breakfast, drive to Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary in Morigaon district.
Pobitora is particularly renowned for its concentration of the greater one-horned rhinoceros and is also recognised as an Important Bird Area. The Assam Forest Department lists jeep safari and birdwatching among its visitor experiences.
After lunch and a short rest, proceed for a jeep safari.
The sanctuary's alluvial grassland and wetland habitat offers opportunities to see:
Greater one-horned rhinoceros, Wild water buffalo, Wild boar, Hog deer, Various wetland birds, Other grassland species
Pobitora is an excellent first wildlife experience because the relatively compact sanctuary allows visitors to become immersed in Assam's floodplain ecosystem quickly.
Overnight: Pobitora
Wildlife time: Afternoon safari
Long transfer day
After an early breakfast, begin the journey towards Nameri National Park in northern Assam.
The route gradually changes from the grassland and wetland landscape of Pobitora towards the forested foothills of the Eastern Himalayas.
Arrive at your Nameri-area eco-lodge or forest camp and check in.
If daylight permits, enjoy a guided nature walk or birding session around the camp.
Nameri is located in Sonitpur district and forms part of the Nameri Tiger Reserve landscape, bordering Arunachal Pradesh. The park's habitat includes riverine and forest ecosystems.
Overnight: Nameri
Wildlife focus: Introductory forest and birding experience
Begin early for a full wildlife and birding experience.
The Jia-Bhorelli River and surrounding forests are central to the character of Nameri.
Explore the riverine and forest habitats with a trained local naturalist.
Possible sightings include:
Hornbills, Kingfishers, Raptors, Riverine birds, Asian elephant, Gaur, Deer, Primates, Other forest wildlife
The Assam Forest Department also lists species such as white-winged wood duck, Pallas's fish eagle, Rufous-necked hornbill, Wreathed hornbill and Great Pied hornbill among Nameri's notable birdlife.
Return to the lodge for lunch and relaxation.
Later, undertake another nature/birding session.
Depending on season, river conditions and current regulations, a Jia-Bhorelli river experience/rafting activity can be considered.
Overnight: Nameri, Wildlife time: Full day
After breakfast, begin the journey from the Assam foothills into Arunachal Pradesh.
Approx. 100–130 km | Around 3–5 hours, depending on your selected Eaglenest camp and road conditions.
The landscape changes dramatically as the road climbs towards the Eastern Himalayas.
Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary lies in West Kameng district and is one of the region's outstanding birding destinations.
The sanctuary has a substantial elevational range and supports an exceptionally diverse bird community, making the transition from Nameri to Eaglenest particularly appropriate for a wildlife/birding expedition.
Arrive at your forest camp/lodge.
If daylight permits, undertake a short introductory birding walk.
Overnight: Eaglenest
Begin before sunrise.
This is the first dedicated specialist birding day of the expedition.
Explore different elevations and forest habitats with a knowledgeable local guide/naturalist.
Bugun liocichla, Hornbills,Tragopans, Ward's trogon, Sunbirds, Laughingthrushes, Flycatchers, Barbets, Parrotbills, Warblers, Babblers, Raptors
Eaglenest has recorded more than 500 bird species and is globally known for the Bugun liocichla, which was discovered here in 2006.
Continue birding and wildlife photography along suitable forest roads and trails.
Overnight: Eaglenest
Wildlife focus: Specialist birding and photography
Keep another full day at Eaglenest.
This is important for a specialist wildlife expedition because bird activity is influenced by weather, elevation, season and recent sightings.
Return to productive birding areas.
Explore another elevation/habitat.
Photography, birding and forest exploration.
Apart from birds, Eaglenest supports diverse mammals, butterflies, reptiles and amphibians. The sanctuary forms part of the broader ecological landscape of the Eastern Himalayas.
Overnight: Eaglenest
Wildlife focus: Full-day birding and photography
After breakfast, descend from the Eastern Himalayan foothills and return to Assam.
Approx. 180–220 km | Around 5–7 hours, depending on the exact Eaglenest camp and road conditions.
Travel through the Bhalukpong/Tezpur side and continue towards Kaziranga National Park.
Arrive at your Kaziranga wildlife lodge and check in.
If time permits, enjoy a short nature walk or birding session around the lodge.
This is deliberately a transfer-focused day, allowing the next two days to be devoted to Kaziranga wildlife.
Overnight: Kaziranga
Begin before sunrise with a jeep safari.
Kaziranga's extraordinary ecosystem combines:
Tall grassland → wetlands → woodland → riverine habitat
The Assam Forest Department describes Kaziranga as a major Brahmaputra floodplain grassland ecosystem and records exceptional diversity of mammals and birds.
Greater one-horned rhinoceros, Asian elephant, Wild water buffalo, Swamp deer, Hog deer, Gaur, Wild boar, Hoolock gibbon, Capped langur, Numerous wetland birds, Raptors, Tiger, with luck
After lunch and a period of rest, undertake a second wildlife excursion, subject to park regulations and seasonal accessibility.
Overnight: Kaziranga
Wildlife focus: Two safari sessions
Keep a second full day for Kaziranga.
This is one of the most important design decisions in the itinerary.
Rather than visiting Kaziranga for one rushed safari, the traveller gets enough time to experience different ranges, habitats and wildlife conditions.
Early jeep safari.
Where operationally possible, explore a different range from the previous day.
Kaziranga currently has multiple tourism ranges, including Central/Kohora, Western/Bagori, Eastern/Agaratoli and Burapahar, with access depending on prevailing park conditions and regulations.
Return to the lodge for breakfast and relaxation.
Second safari or specialist birding drive.
Kaziranga has recorded approximately 480 bird species, including globally threatened and near-threatened species.
Overnight: Kaziranga
Wildlife focus: Full wildlife and photography day
Approx. 88–105 km | Around 2–2.5 hours
After breakfast, drive eastwards to Jorhat.
The short transfer is one of the advantages of ending the expedition in Jorhat rather than returning to Guwahati. The Assam Forest Department places Kohora approximately 88 km from Jorhat and identifies Jorhat as an important access point for Kaziranga.
Arrive in Jorhat and check into your hotel.
Depending on arrival time, use the afternoon for an optional Assam tea experience, such as:
Tea garden visit
Tea factory visit, where operationally possible
Tea tasting
Introduction to Assam's tea heritage
Relaxed birding around tea-country landscapes
This creates a pleasant transition from intensive wildlife exploration to the cultural landscape of Upper Assam.
Overnight: Jorhat
After breakfast, transfer to Jorhat Airport for your onward journey.
Depending on the departure schedule, an optional short morning experience can be arranged.
The expedition concludes after travelling through four remarkably different wildlife environments:
From the hoolock gibbon forests of Hoolongapar to the rhino country of Kaziranga and Pobitora, the Himalayan foothills of Nameri, Eaglenest, the wilderness of Manas and the mighty Brahmaputra, this journey offers an unusually diverse introduction to Assam's natural heritage.
