Planning a Trip to Northeast India?
Specially Curated for Wildlife Photographers
This 4 Days / 3 Nights private photography journey is designed for photographers who want to experience Kaziranga National Park through different habitats and safari ranges, rather than simply covering the park as a conventional sightseeing destination.
The programme combines an early-morning photography walk in Hollongapar Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary, an immersive Assam tea garden experience, and three carefully selected Kaziranga safari ranges — Kohora (Central), Agaratoli (Eastern) and Burapahar.
The photographic experience progresses from forest primates and tea landscapes to Kaziranga's iconic rhinoceros and grassland wildlife, then to the wetlands and bird-rich eastern range, before concluding with the forested and hilly habitat of Burapahar.
This is not simply a four-day Kaziranga sightseeing package. The itinerary is structured around photographic opportunities:
Safari Range Primary Photographic Character Key Opportunities
Kohora / Central Open grassland & wetland Rhino, elephant, wild buffalo, swamp deer, landscapes
Agaratoli / Eastern Wetlands & bird-rich habitat Waterbirds, raptors, elephants, wetland landscapes
Burapahar Forest & hilly terrain Hoolock Gibbon, capped langur, forest birds, elephants
Rare opportunity
Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary Open forest on hiking Western Hoolock Gibbon
The purpose of using these three ranges and Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary is to give photographers three substantially different photographic environments within one short expedition rather than repeating the same type of safari experience.
The tour begins in Jorhat, the gateway to Upper Assam's tea country and one of the most interesting starting points for a wildlife photography journey.
Start early and proceed to Hollongapar Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary.
The morning forest walk is designed around photography rather than conventional sightseeing.
With a local guide, explore the forest trails and look carefully into the canopy for Hoolock Gibbons, India's only ape, along with other primates and forest birds.
The dense forest environment provides a completely different photographic challenge from Kaziranga's open floodplains.
Hoolock Gibbon
Capped and other primates
Forest birds
Canopy photography
Forest textures
Natural light and low-light photography
Behavioural photography
The early morning light can be particularly atmospheric for forest photography.
After the sanctuary experience, continue to an Assam tea estate.
Explore the tea garden and photograph:
Tea plantations
Tea pluckers
Tea garden landscapes
Tea-processing activities, where available
Traditional tea culture
Rural Assam
Plantation architecture
A tea-tasting experience can also be arranged depending on the estate and schedule.
This gives photographers the opportunity to create a visual story of Assam beyond wildlife — from forest to tea country.
Overnight: Jorhat
Photography Theme:
Forest Wildlife • Primates • Birds • Tea Landscapes • Rural Assam
After an early breakfast, depart Jorhat for Kaziranga National Park.
The journey takes you through the landscapes of Upper Assam towards one of India's most celebrated wildlife destinations.
After arrival and check-in, have lunch and allow some time for rest before the afternoon safari.
In the afternoon, enter Kaziranga through the Kohora / Central Range for your first dedicated wildlife photography safari.
The Central Range offers the classic Kaziranga experience, combining open grasslands, wetlands and forest patches. It is a productive area for photographing one-horned rhinoceros, elephants, swamp deer, wild water buffalo and birds.
Rather than rushing between sightings, the focus is on allowing time for:
Clean wildlife portraits
Environmental portraits
Wildlife behaviour
Animal–habitat compositions
Backlit subjects
Grassland landscapes
Birds and smaller wildlife
Golden-hour photography
The Central Range is particularly useful for establishing your first photographic story of Kaziranga — iconic wildlife in the park's open floodplain landscape.
Return to the lodge after the safari.
Overnight: Kaziranga
Photography Theme:
Rhino • Elephant • Wild Buffalo • Swamp Deer • Grassland Wildlife
Today is the key bird and wetland photography day.
Rise early and proceed to the Agaratoli / Eastern Range.
For wildlife photographers, this range provides an important contrast to the Central Range.
Agaratoli is particularly associated with wetlands, water bodies and birdlife, making it an excellent environment for bird photography. It is also known for elephant herds and a variety of other wildlife.
Depending on season and conditions, photographers may encounter:
Waterbirds & Wetland Species
Ducks and geese
Egrets
Herons
Storks
Ibises
Cormorants
Pelicans
Raptors & Forest Birds
Fishing eagles
Serpent eagles
Other raptors
Hornbills
Kingfishers
Smaller woodland birds
Agaratoli has also been associated with the Bengal Florican, a rare grassland bird, although sightings cannot be guaranteed.
The range is not only for bird photographers.
Keep watch for:
Asian Elephant
Wild Water Buffalo
Swamp Deer
Rhinoceros
Other grassland and wetland wildlife
The combination of water, tall grass, forest edges and open landscapes allows photographers to work on different compositions throughout the safari.
Agaratoli helps make this itinerary more than a conventional “rhino safari”.
The photographic story changes from:
Open grassland wildlife → wetlands → birds → elephants → forest edges
Return to the lodge after the safari for breakfast and rest.
The remainder of the day can be kept flexible for photography review, relaxation or an optional local experience, depending on safari timings and photographer preferences.
Overnight: Kaziranga
Photography Theme:
Birds • Wetlands • Raptors • Elephants • Water Buffalo • Grassland Birds
Start early for the final safari of the photography tour in the Burapahar Range.
This is deliberately different from the previous two safaris.
Where Kohora provides expansive grassland photography and Agaratoli focuses strongly on wetlands and birds, Burapahar offers a more forested and hilly environment.
The range is particularly interesting for photographers interested in:
Hoolock Gibbons
Capped Langurs
Forest birds
Asian Elephants
Forest landscapes
Dense vegetation
Woodland compositions
The terrain and vegetation create opportunities for a completely different visual style.
This final safari is about looking upward as well as across the landscape.
Photographers can work on:
Canopy Photography
Searching the treetops for Hoolock Gibbons and other arboreal wildlife.
Forest Portraits
Using foliage, branches, and filtered light to create more intimate wildlife images.
Primate Photography
The forest habitat makes this particularly interesting for photographers who want to photograph primates in their natural environment.
Landscape Photography
The hilly terrain provides a photographic contrast to Kaziranga's open floodplain.
Burapahar is also known for having fewer tourists than the better-known central areas, although visitor levels vary by day and season.
After completing the morning safari, return to the lodge for breakfast and check-out.
Begin the journey back towards Jorhat.
The tour concludes in the second half of the day.
End of Photography Tour: Jorhat
